ULTRASOUND

ULTRASOUND OF ABDOMEN AND PELVIS

1. The tests that have been ordered for you are ABDOMEN and PELVIC SONOGRAMS. The tests will examine your abdominal organs (gallbladder, liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and aorta) as well as your pelvic organs (uterus, ovaries) using sound waves. There are no known health risks from using these sound waves to make images.

2. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight until 1 hour before your appointment. One hour prior to your appointment, drink 36 ounces of water. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER. You may take medication along with the water

3. A registered ultrasonographer will make a set of images for the Radiologist. A Radiologist is a medical doctor that specializes in x-rays, ultrasound, and other imaging tests. Both the sonographer and the Radiologist may scan your abdomen and make images. This is routine and does not indicate any abnormality. A gel will be applied to your abdomen and the ultrasound transducer will be rubbed on your skin.

4. The Radiologist will interpret your examination and a report will be sent to your doctor in the following 7 – 10 days. You will receive your report from your doctor.

Ultrasound of Abdomen, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Aorts, Liver, Spleen, Kidneys ; Also Renal Doppler

1. The test that has been ordered for you is an ABDOMEN SONOGRAM. This test will examine your gallbladder, liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and aorta using sound waves. There are no known health risks from using these sound waves to make images. A renal sonogram examines the kidneys, and the renal doppler examines the blood vessels in the kidneys.

2. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight until after the exam is completed the following morning. We cannot adequately visualize the gallbladder after you have eaten. You may take medication with a small amount of water. It is also difficult to image kidneys after eating because of the bowel contents. If you must take your medication with food and cannot wait until after your exam, please call us for instructions at 940-766-8494, 766-8694.

3. If you are scheduled for an Upper GI following your sonogram, your stomach must be completely empty. In this case, do not eat or drink anything after midnight until after the exam is completed the following morning, and do not take any medication. If you must take your medication and cannot wait until after your exam, please call us for instructions at 940-766-8694, 940-766-8494.

O.B. ULTRASOUND (SONOGRAM)

This is a medical procedure that requires time and concentration. One adult that stays with you during the entire exam may accompany you into the exam room. Adults cannot change places during the exam. You may not bring young children into the room with you. Your appointment will be rescheduled if you do not bring someone to care for your children during the examination.

1. The test that has been ordered for you is an O.B. SONOGRAM. This test will give the obstetrician information and measurements on the fetus. There are no known health risks to Mom or Baby from using these sound waves to make images.

2. DRINK 36 OUNCES OF WATER, FINISHING ONE HOUR BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT TIME. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER. A full bladder will help to image the lower uterus and cervix to locate the position of the placenta. YOUR APPOINTMENT MAY BE RESCHEDULED IF YOUR BLADDER IS NOT FULL.

3. A registered ultrasonographer will make a set of images for the Radiologist. A Radiologist is a medical doctor that specializes in x-rays, ultrasound, and other imaging tests. Both the sonographer and the Radiologist may scan your lower abdomen and make images. This is routine and does not indicate any abnormality. A gel will be applied to your abdomen and the ultrasound transducer will be rubbed on your skin.

4. A second-third trimester sonogram will include measurements of the baby's head, abdomen, and thigh bones, as well as images of the heart, spine, placenta, and cord. Plan to be in the Radiology department for at least an hour for this test.

5. The Radiologist will do a preliminary evaluation of your films before you leave, and a report will be sent to your doctor in the following week. Your obstetrician will give you the final report after combining the results of your sonogram with your other clinical data.

6. Please remember: THIS IS A MEDICAL PROCEDURE THAT REQUIRES TIME AND CONCENTRATION. YOU MAY BRING ONE ADULT INTO THE EXAM ROOM. YOU MAY NOT BRING YOUNG CHILDREN INTO THE ROOM WITH YOU. YOUR APPOINTMENT WILL BE RESCHEDULED IF YOU DO NOT BRING SOMEONE TO CARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN DURING THE EXAMINATION.

7. We now offer our OB patients a set of four baby pictures printed on paper that will be given to you at the end of the sonogram. We no longer videotape exams.

8. If you have any questions about this test, please call the Radiology Department at 940-766-8494 or 940-766-8749.

Please call us at these numbers if you must cancel or reschedule your exam.

PELVIC ULTRASOUND (SONOGRAM)

1. The test that has been ordered for you is a PELVIC SONOGRAM. This test will examine the uterus and ovaries using sound waves. There are no known health risks from using these sound waves to make images.

2. Drink 36 ounces of water, FINISHING one hour before your appointment time. DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER. A full bladder is very important to a successful exam. The bladder pushes the bowel out of the way to better visualize the pelvic organs.

IF YOUR BLADDER IS NOT FULL, the exam may be delayed while you drink more water and wait for your bladder to completely fill.

4. You may be scheduled for a TRANSVAGINAL SONOGRAM in addition to the routine pelvic sonogram. This means that a pencil-like transducer will be inserted into the vagina to create the image. Sometimes both types of exams are necessary to get the best possible test results.

5. FOLLICULAR SERIES: We ask that you come with a full bladder for the first appointment of your series. We will utilize both types of scans on that appointment, and do transvaginal scans thereafter.

6. The Radiologist will interpret your examination and a report will be sent to your doctor in 7 - 10 days. You will receive your report from your doctor.

7. If you have any questions about this test, please call the Radiology Department at 940-766-8694 or 940-766-8749.

Please call us at these numbers if you must cancel or reschedule your exam.Thank you.
