NUCLEAR MEDICINE

1.You have an appointment for a Nuclear Medicine Scan. Nuclear Medicine uses very small, safe amounts of Radioactive materials to obtain images of specific organs. The isotope used depends on the organ to be examined. You will check in for your appointment at the 3rd floor Cashier desk and continue to the Cardiology waiting room.

2.Nuclear Medicine Scans help your doctor to see the function and blood flow to your organs. This is done using a special camera that can see the radioactivity in your body. The images are recorded on a computer, and then put onto film for the Radiologist to review. The Radiologist's interpretation is forwarded to your doctor in the following week. You will receive your report from your doctor. Nuclear Medicine is often used in conjunction with other exams to find out more about a certain situations.

DURING THE EXAM

The Technologist will administer the radioisotope by injecting it into your veins. You will be positioned under the special gamma camera for the images. Sometimes these images require that you not move for fairly long periods of time, and that you assume several different positions. However, Nuclear Medicine is both harmless and painless.
