CAT SCAN

CT (CAT SCAN)

1. The test that has been ordered for you is a CAT SCAN, also known as CT (Computerized Axial Tomography). CNT has acquired a sophisticated scanner that provides a three-dimensional image of the inner structure of a patient’s body. The CT scanner takes x-ray pictures of cross-sections of the body, called “slices. Using the latest computer technology, the data can be reconstructed so that the Radiologist can look at body parts from various angles.

2. The technologist will ask you to lie on the CT table. The scan time is very short on the new scanner, ranging from 1 to 10 minutes. The technologist will want you to wait while they review the initial data set. Image reconstruction will be done after you leave. A Radiologist (a medical doctor who specializes in x-rays, CT, and other imaging tests) will interpret the images. The radiologist may also manipulate the image data for the interpretation.

3. PREPARATION: ABDOMEN/PELVIS CT:DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING FOR 2 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT TIME.
You will be asked to drink a liquid called barium, which is an inert ingredient that highlights the intestines. You should receive a bottle of this liquid to take home with you at the time that you schedule your appointment. YOU WILL NEED TO DRINK THE BARIUM 2-HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR EXAM TIME. If for some reason, you are not given the barium, you will need to come to the Radiology department 2 hours prior to the appointment time.

HEAD: DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING 2 HOURS PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT TIME

CHEST: DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING 2 HOURS PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT TIME.

EXTREMITY: No preparation necessary.

SPINE: No preparation necessary.

4. Some CT’s require use of a contrast agent, which is injected into your arm. The contrast is excreted by the kidneys. In order to evaluate kidney function, lab work may be needed 1-2 days before your exam. If you must have the lab done on the same day as your CT, it must be performed at least 2 hours prior to your appointment time so that we can receive the results prior to your test.

5. The Radiologist will study the images created during your CT scan. The scan consists of numerous images so it takes extra time to review the data. It may take up to 2 weeks for your physician to receive the report, and review the results.

If you have any questions about this test, please call the Cat Scan Department at 940-761-8573.
